“That they admonish the young women to love their husbands,
to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good,
obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed” (Titus 2:4, 5).
MANY PEOPLE jokingly say that in today’s families, the only control husbands have is the “remote control,” that is, if their children allow them to have it. Others also jokingly affirm that women rule
at home, except for the mother-in-law, who rules in two homes. This, of course, has indirectly created a struggle, at times openly and others covertly. But, what’s the point of spouses looking at each other’s face as opponents and not as members of the same team?
For the purpose of this reflection, 1 will take the liberty of exchanging the word “bossing around” for “leading.” Bossing implies someone has to be obeyed and, according to the Holy Scriptures, children are the only ones who must obey their parents. When speaking of leadership in the family, a controversy comes up. Some people affirm that the husband and father is the one who should be in charge of the family, making decisions that his wife and children should obey without questioning. They base this theory on the argument that, since a man provides for his family, he has the right to decide how those goods are administered. An opposing current affirms that the wife and mother should take the leading role in the family decisions, because she is the one who spends more time at home. And a third stance proposes that, when a father and mother provide for the family, they should have joint leadership.
Actually, a family’s leadership can’t only be based on the administration of assets; it has to do with natural disposition, abilities, and emotional characteristics. And for this, it’s necessary for the wife and husband to form a team, making the most use of each other’s personal abilities. This will lead to the equitable distribution of roles.
A father and a mother are two leaders with different roles, but focused on achieving the same goals: their family’s well-being, stability, and prosperity.
Homes should be a place where each member grows and fully develops, and where assets are optimally used for a common goal.
