«When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You In the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice” (Psalm 63.6, 7).
SLEEPING is a marvelous benefit that, unfortunately, many women cannot enjoy. Lack of sleep makes them feel tired during the day; it may them irritable and hinders their concentration.
Insomnia or lack of sleep at night is related to some diseases of physical origin, but it also has a negative impact on mental health. Excessive worry generates anxiety, and this prevents reaching the state of relaxation necessary for a restful sleep. Some studies indicate that during sleep, the body repairs itself, and during the day, productivity increases, physical performance and concentration improve. When this restful sleep is missing, everything is affected.
Being worried when we should be sleeping is frequent in many women.
This makes us toss and turn in bed, think and think again, looking for answers and not finding them, which creates a vicious circle that’s difficult to reverse. The key to calm, deep, and refreshing sleep is found in this simple prayer: «I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8). The sequence presented by this Psalm is extraordinary:
- I will lie down in peace. The first condition for sleeping is feeling peace and tranquility before going to bed. This peace is found in the assurance that you will be able to do tomorrow what you could not do today or that perhaps it isn’t even necessary to do.
- I will sleep now. When the mind does not allow you to sleep and you are caught up with contradictory thoughts, the sleep escapes. If you are trapped in this game of obsessive thoughts that nothing solves, put your trust in God since He takes care of us. Personalize this promise and repeat it in your mind until it becomes a habit when you close your eyes to sleep. You can say, «You take care of me.” Don’t get tired of repeating it until sleep wraps you in a deep rest.
- You make me dwell in safety. Mistrust is a threat to mental health. We distrust people, our abilities and that our plans will be carried out, which always keeps us in a state of alert and anxiety. Trust in God with the conviction of His presence and His care. Trust in the Lord.
When it is time to sleep, don’t count sheep; count the blessings you have received from God during the day.
