IT’S GOOD TO BEAR TO YOKE

«It is good for a man to bear the yoke in his youth» (Lamentations 3:27).

PERHAPS THE NAME Matilde Montoya Lafragua doesn’t mean much to you; it may not even mean anything to you. However, behind her name there is an extraordinary story of perseverance, effort, and mettle. This woman’s perseverance allowed her to become the first woman doctor in Mexico. To do so, she had to confront a society in which the field of medicine was exclusively for men. In spite of that, she dared to write a letter to Porfirio Diaz, the country’s president at that time. He was moved and helped her gain admission into the School of Medicine in Puebla, where she finished her studies after taking the last exam on August 24, 1887, which she passed with the examiners’ unanimous approval.

Matilde’s story is an inspiration for every woman today; but it’s more than that—a life example. Your story can also be a life example for future generations. Women with belittled spirits who convince themselves that nothing they do is right, remain anonymous. Those who decide to stay comfortable, who see challenges as unbeatable obstacles and hide themselves behind the circumstances doing nothing worthwhile, are anonymous. Do you want to be one of them? Isn’t it better to step out of anonymity and shine for your internal conviction of a fighting spirit, courage and faith?

We must shine like Esther, Joshua, Joseph and so many young people whose experiences are written in the Bible. They overcame such adverse circumstances as the lack of freedom, false accusations or even the risk to fulfill the mission God had planned for them. They had two resources, trust in God and will power. With those two weapons, they were able to bear their yoke.

I want to tell those who are starting their road in life, that God created you to do big and good things. Don’t waste years doing «nothing» and complaining about «a lot.» Being inconsistent with your plans delays your moments of glory.

If you don’t make mistakes, you will never get things right; dare to go beyond your circumstances and look beyond your limitations. The God who loves young people tells you: «No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

I will not leave you nor forsake you» (Joshua 1:5).
