THE POWER OF MUSIC
«l love you, Lord; you are my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies» (Psalm 18:1-3).
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther hung his 95 thesis on the door of the cathedral in Wittenberg, Germany, thus starting the most prominent events in Protestant Reformation.
The most powerful hymn at that time was composed by Martin Luther himself. It became a battle song for people and a great source of strength and inspiration even for those who faced martyrdom for their convictions.
The hymn has been translated into practically every language and is considered one of the classics.
Like the Psalmist, many times Luther had to take refuge from his enemies and protect himself from their relentless schemes.
One time he had to remain in hiding for a long time at a castle in Wartburg, a fortress on an isolated mountain. There, although many thought his work had ended, he translated the New Testament into German and kept on writing treatises that circulated among fellow Germans with a message of censure and hope.
In the fascinating chapter that narrates Luther’s life in The Great Controversy, Ellen White tells us that God not only delivered him from his enemies, but also placed him out of reach of men’s praise and admiration (ch. 8, p. 169). That way, Luther always kept in mind that God was his Savior, defender and mighty fortress.
Perhaps you don’t have to face enemies who wish your death, like Luther did that time, but you may need to turn to God as your fortress today. Don’t forget that His help is still available and He will help you find something good to do, even if you’re apparently going through a one of the unhappiest times in your life.
