«For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you’ » (Isaiah 41:13).
BEING IN HARMONY with ourselves and with the people around us will not necessarily make us get the friendship and sympathy of all, but it will provide us with satisfaction by sustaining our sense of personal worth.
Dear friend, don’t worry about being liked by everyone, worry about liking yourself. This means valuing your physical attributes, accepting your emotional and spiritual qualities, and fully developing your intellectual abilities. Above all, don’t lock yourself in the darkest part of your past, for you will overshadow your present and you will not be able to visualize the glorious future that God has promised.
Of course, there are certain personal attitudes that will help us oil and smooth the roughness of the interpersonal relationships. First of all: have a positive attitude toward life, especially when difficult times knock on the door of your emotions. Other actions you can take include the following:
- Make those around you feel that they are important to you; offer sincere emotional affection, without superficial flattery.
- Set healthy limits to your emotions. Emotional extremes sometimes cause us to ride roughshod over the rights of others.
- Learn how to deal with criticism, we are always exposed to it. When you are the subject of criticism, count to twenty before responding; then answer with words that show you are calm and kind. Never react to an offensive comment. Let those who criticize you leave without a reason to criticize you again.
- Talk about others in terms that you’d like them to use about you. And if you can’t do it, then you better keep quiet.
- Be authentic: we all have qualities that we can offer to others.
Remember: if you feel good, you look good. It’s a simple formula that will help you to get daily strength to live. And on the gray days, when your personal strength and self-love are overwhelmed by adverse circumstances, God will be there to say, «See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me» (Isaiah 49:16).
