«And know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them» (Romans 8:28).
I had just missed a flight and was about to miss another. I walked the endless airport corridors with two extremely heavy backpacks on my back and my left arm and a suitcase in my right hand. But that suitcase didn’t have any wheels, so, feeling tired, I nudged it forward with my foot to keep on going. I was focused on my bad mood, when suddenly, with a pain-stricken look on her face, a woman asked for my help. Her arm was fractured and she was also juggling her luggage. I stopped to help her.
We walked quickly and, when we reached the counter where we were to be assigned to a new flight, we started talking more calmly in a mixture of Spanish and Portuguese. We talked about social problems, family, college, work and … God. I told her I was Adventist. She told me she had watched family and healthy cooking programs on the Hope Channel and also told me about some other spiritual concerns she had. She wanted to Know more about our beliefs and seemed very cheerful in spite of the news: there were no more flights and we would have to wait … her at a hotel; and me on the airport floor … for five nights (although I didn’t know that yet). Before going to the hotel, and since she had been given meal tickets, she invited me to have breakfast with her.
It was 4:00 a.m. and we sat down at one of the few restaurants that were open. We decided to exchange addresses and stay in touch and, while she wrote down her information, I took the opportunity to open my Bible and share my favorite Bible verse with her: Romans 8:28, which seemed so appropriate for the situation we were going through. She finished writing and handed me her piece of paper. When I looked at it, to my surprise, I realized that in addition to her information, in her neat grandmotherly handwriting, she had jotted down in Portuguese: «Carol, all things work together for good to those who love God» (Romains 8:28).
I’m sure God wanted to remind us both of that promise. He specializes in transforming unfortunate situations into great blessings.
I’m sure He wants to remind you of that promise today as well. Trust in Him. He will do the rest.
