Pete loved his new life. The Messiah taught him how to cast out devils—something that’s always exciting. One night he even walked on water. Now, how many fishers did that?
Then things got very scary. First, Jesus was arrested. When people accused Pete of being a follower of the Messiah, he denied it. He swore he didn’t even know Jesus! At that moment he glanced up to see his Master looking at him, and he realized that he’d lied. In fact, he’d betrayed his friendship with the one Man who had given him hope for the future.
Soon after that, they crucified Jesus.
Gloom, misery, and shame followed the big fisher back to Galilee, where he and the others returned to their fishing business. The Baptist was gone. The Messiah was gone. And hope itself was gone.
«Did you catch anything?» a voice called from the beach early one morning as Pete and the others were guiding their boat back to port.
«No,» he responded with frustration. «Fished all night. Nothing.»
«Put your nets down on the right side of your boat.»
Nothing else had worked, so they tried it. In an instant their nets were full! Pete blinked and strained to recognize the stranger who’d led them to the early-morning school of fish. «It’s the Messiah!» he breathed.
With a happy shout, Pete plunged into the water and swam for shore. Jesus had returned!
The burly fisher fell at the Messiah’s feet and wept. Could He forgive the denial, the lies, and the betrayal? Was there still hope?
