MIDNIGHT RIDER

This man deserves to have you [heal his servant], because he loves our nation» (Luke 7:4, 5).

A man stood beside his horse on a dark hillside and stared across a stretch of water to a church rising above the trees. The lives of hundreds of people and possibly the future of his beloved country lay on his shoulders.

«One if by land. Two if by sea.» He repeated those words over and over, not wanting to forget their grave meaning.

War between America and England was inevitable. American farmers felt that everything they’d worked for was in jeopardy. All had armed themselves and were ready to fight if British soldiers appeared. That’s why Paul Revere stood on that hillside waiting for the signal. Spies at the British fort were watching troop movements. If the soldiers marched by land, one lantern would shine from the church steeple. But if the men took boats and crossed the water, two lanterns would glow.

Suddenly one . . . and then two lights sparkled across the water. The British were on the move, and they were coming by boat.

Paul Revere rode as he’d never ridden before, his voice calling the sleeping farmers to battle. «The British are coming. The British are coming! Prepare to fight!» His warning saved lives and launched a nation.

Today millions fear the future. They know something evil is trying to invade their lives.

But we’ve seen the signal—the fall-ing stars and blood-red moon.

«Jesus is coming. Jesus is coming soon!» we shout. With these words, the battle against Satan begins.
