FORGIVENESS
«I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of Cod, who loved me and gave Himself for me» (Galatians 2:20).
The act of forgiveness has great therapeutic benefits. But have you ever tried wanting to forgive someone but did not know how? Is there a formula to carry out the process of forgiveness?
In their article «A Review of Forgiveness Process Models and A Coping Framework to Guide Future Research, «the Australian researchers Peter Strelan and Tanya Covid warned that, despite the advances in forgiveness research, the process itself is practically unknown. Having reviewed the existing scientific literature, this study concludes that there is no coherent theoretical grounding or enough empirical tests yet to identify this process.
However, there is evidence (even if not scientific) to affirm that most of the people are able to ask for forgiveness and/or forgive within minutes. Ien Chi, an art student at Emory University (California, USA , without being directly interested in the forgiveness theme, introduced some proof. Through a school competition called Campus MovieFest, he made a small short movie where he proved what the majority would do if they had with only a few minutes left to live. During those few minutes, the main character desperately tried to fix everything he had done wrong so he can die in peace. Let us remember the famous quote of Steve Jobs: «Because almost everything—all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure— these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.» In the short movie, it is clearly stated that asking for forgiveness or forgiving is what the majority of people would do if they knew they had only five minutes left to live.
This means that time is not essential in order to forgive. It means that the intensity of damage or pride is not an excuse. We do not need to make a record of the insults or pour out our hearts through the narration of the maltreatment in extensive or expensive psychotherapies.
Because peace is more important than reliving the pain of the past, we invite you to seek forgiveness and enjoy the valuable time in what is left of your life. If you let Christ live in your heart, ego and pride will die and forgiveness will also be a reality in your existence.
