THE WAY YOU SPEAK GIVES AWAY WHO YOU ARE

«If you plan to do evil, you will be lost; if you plan to do good, you will receive unfailing love and faithfulness» (Proverbs 14:22, NLT).

THE TONGUE

Peter is one of the most popular disciples of the Bible, especially because of his impulsive nature. At times, it seemed as if the apostle’s tongue worked faster than his brain. Yet Jesus loved him as much as He did the rest of the future leaders of the church. That’s why the Lord warned Peter that one day he would have to overcome a difficult test related precisely to one of his most notorious problems: his tongue. Peter would deny Jesus at the most critical moment for Him. Of course, the disciple assured Him that would never happen. When Jesus was apprehended in the middle of a night filled with confusion for His followers, Peter was left alone while Jesus was taken before the Sanhedrin. Suddenly, someone approached him and accused him of being one of the followers of the Galilean. Peter denied it and left the place. However, a servant stared at him and told those around her that he was one of the men who had been with the accused. Peter refused to acknowledge the Lord. Finally, a group of men said to him, «Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you» (Matthew 26:73). Peter was accused of being a follower of Jesus because of the way he spoke! The sad thing was that to deny this, the disciple began to use curses and vulgar words to convince his accusers that he was not who they claimed him to be. Later on the apostle wept bitterly and repented of his actions.

Our speech expresses our feelings, beliefs, principles, and the values we hold dear. Our words reveal the kind of relationship we have with God. Sometimes it’s not even necessary to tell other people that we are Christians, because, as in Peter’s case, the way we speak gives away who we are. Likewise, foul, disrespectful, and vulgar language reveals the kind of influences that govern our lives.

What does your way of speaking reveal about you? Can you hear the echo of your words? Whether they are few or many, your words are an indicator of where your faith stands. Therefore, the most important thing is to give and consecrate your life to Jesus so that your words can express that to others.

Ask the Lord to transform your life today so you can reveal Him to others through your words.
