“So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me”’ (Hebrews 13:6, KJV).
The thirteenth chapter of Hebrews is a list of suggestions for living a successful Christian life: love one another; practice hospitality; help the prisoners and those who suffer; remain faithful to your spouse, and free of all impurity; don’t be in love with money, be happy with what you have; respect and obey your leaders; don’t follow after false teachings; always do good. In the midst of this advice is the promise: “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me» (Hebrews 13:6, KJV).
The promise “I will never leave you nor forsake you” was given to Jacob (Genesis 28:15), to Israel (see Deuteronomy 31:8), to Joshua (see Joshua 1:5), and to Solomon (see 1 Chronicles 28:20). It is an inheritance that comes down the line to you. God will not remove His presence nor His help. The declaration ‘I will not fear what man shall do to me” (Hebrews 13:6, KJV) was taken from Psalm 118:6: “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do to met » It is paraphrased in Romans 8:31: “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Human power, no matter how great, will always be limited. No matter how strong it is, it cannot compare with omnipotent God.
God uses what others do against you for your good. When someone wants to hurt you, God knows, God hears, and God sees. If He does not change your circumstances in your favor, it is because He will uses those circumstances to change you, so that you will develop godliness, an indispensable quality in order to go to heaven. Face each trial with this deep conviction.
You will meet with many trials, but if you bear them patiently they will refine and purify, ennoble and elevate you spiritually. Very great troubles are coming upon the world, and the powers of Satan are stirring with intensity the powers from beneath to work suffering, disaster, and ruin. His work is to create all the misery upon hu- man beings that is possible. The earth is the scene of his action, but he is held in check. He can go no farther than the Lord permits. O how gracious is our Lord! ‘I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee’ (Hebrews 13:5). ‘I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands’ (Isaiah 49:16)…. ‘I will not leave you comfortless’ (John l4:18)’’— That I May Know Him.. 284, October 5.
