“By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they mere not afraid of the King’s command” (Hebrews 11:23).
The King had decreed that every male child be killed at birth. The midwives had spared the life of little Moses (see Exodus 1:27); it depended on the faith of his parents whether this child would become the liberator of Israel.
What would have been of Moses if his parents’ fear had been greater than their faith? Jochebed understood that her son had been born with a purpose, and she did everything she could to save his life, and left the rest to God. This shows us that genuine faith overcomes fear and gives us the courage to obey God even if that implies disobeying royal decrees. When a mother acts with faith for the salvation of her child, God completes the job and rewards her trust.
In spite of the danger, Moses’s parents hid the baby for three months. When the home became an unsafe place for him, in a heroic act of faith, they built a basket, made it watertight, and put their son in it. They carried their precious burden to the Nile River and left it among the reeds, hoping that their innocent child would awaken compassion in someone from the royal family. ‘The mother’s earnest prayers had committed her child to the care of God; and angels, unseen, hovered above his lowly resting place. Angels directed Pharaoh’s daughter thither. God had heard the mother’s prayers; her faith had been rewarded.»—Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 22, p. 248.
Genuine faith is accompanied by superhuman actions, and they are always rewarded: Parents on their knees, children standing firm; parents praying, children triumphing; reverent parents, obedient children. If there were more parents with genuine faith, they would do more heroic acts for the salvation of their children. How much are you willing to do for the salvation of your children? Moses’s parents received a place in the hall of faith because they considered the salvation of their son more worthy than their own lives. If you have interceded for your children, and they are not in the faith, cling to this promise: “The prayers of Christian mothers are not disregarded by the Father of all, who send His Son to the earth to ransom a people for Himself.
He will not turn away your petitions and leave you and yours to the buffetings of Satan in the great day of final conflict. It is for you to work with simplicity and faithfulness, and God will establish the work of your hands.”— Child Guidance, ch. 78, p. 526.
