«Nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord» Romans 8:39, NLT
AS THEY TALKED and untied knots on a silk thread, Daniel Webster, the prominent nineteenth-century lawyer who served as the United States’ Secretary of State, said to his girlfriend Grace, «Let us see if we can tie a knot which will not untie for a lifetime.» They immediately took a piece of silk and began tying an intricate knot. When they finished, they decided to regard it as the ceremony of their engagement. After Webster’s death in 1852, his relatives found a small box in his house which he had marked «Precious Documents.» The surprising thing was that it did not contain legal or government documents. Clifton Fadiman says the precious documents were love letters Webster had written to Grace, and the knot that was never untied was there as well. *
Despite having managed to tie a knot that can never be untied, was the Websters’ love stronger than God’s love for us? In Romans 8, the apostle Paul asks a series of questions, and the last one is, «Who shall separate us from the love of God?» (verse 35). The same verse mentions a series of elements the enemy uses to try to shatter our relationship with God: «Tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or sword?» Of course not. «In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us,» says verse 37.
The climax of this passage gives us this great assurance: «l am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord» (verses 38, 39, NIV). There is a knot that nothing and no one can untie. There is nothing you can do to make God stop loving you; there is no dark and lonely place into which Satan can corner you where God’s love cannot find you; no distance is too great for God’s love to travel; no sin is so grave that God’s love cannot cover it.
Nothing in this world or the next will be able to untie the bond of love between us and God. Treasure that in your heart as the most precious document.
