“But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ’Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid’” (Matthew 14:27).
Jesus appeared in the middle of the terrible storm to save His terrified disciples, but they thought He was a ghost. It wasn’t natural for someoneto walk on the crests of the waves, but Jesus knows that it is in the most desperate storm that He gets our complete attention. He doesn’t leave us to wonder. He had shown Himself to be the Bread of Life, and now He would show Himself as the great I Am, the Lord of the wind and of the waves.
Jesus has a name for each need. For your material needs, He is the Bread of Life. If you walk in darkness, He is the Light of the World. If you are ill, He is the Balm of Gilead. If you suffer injustice, He is the Righteous Judge. If you are an orphan, He is your loving Father. If a friend betrays you, He is your faithful Friend. In a stormy sea of tribulations, He is the Lord of the wind and the waves. Imagine the joy and peace of the disciples when they heard the voice of their Master. How comforting it is to receive help at just the right time!
I once spent several days with my older daughter in a children’s hospital, without any friends or family with me. I got there late for my daughter’s operation, and they told me that she had what they believed was a cancerous tumor on her leg. The anxious silence in the hall was interrupted by the sound of steps: it was my two sisters. How sweet their voices sounded when they said, “We are here!”
What power there is in the words “I am here!” In times of need those words change the panorama, the fear, the sorrow, the pain, and the loneliness. Maybe that is why God repeats over and over again, “I am here.” His presence is close by when you need it most: “The Lord is at hand” (Philippians 4:3). “In the darkest days, when appearances seem so forbidding, fear not. Have faith in God. He is working out His will, doing all things well in behalf of His people. The strength of those who love and serve Him will be renewed day by day. His understanding will be placed at their service, that they may not err in the carrying out of His purposes.”—Sons and Daughters of God, p. 219, July 31.
‘I AM means an eternal presence; the past, present, and future are alike with God. He sees the most remote events of past history and the far distant future with as clear a vision as we do those things which are transpiring daily.”—That I May Know Him, p. 12, January 6.
