“But when he saw that the mind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ’Lord, save me!”’ (Matthew 14:30).
That stormy night on the sea, Peter was the first to identify the “ghost» as Jesus, the only one who dared leave the boat, the only one, except Jesus, who walked on the water, willing to do what none of the others even tried. Although it was only a few steps, he defied the forces of gravity. When we are facing danger, we are willing to try what we wouldn’t do in normalcircumstances.
Peter’s faith in Jesus although it was small at the time, was what made him get out of the boat, but when he took his eyes off of the Master, he couldn’t continue to walk on the stormy sea. “Looking unto Jesus, Peter walks securely; but as in self-satisfaction he glances back toward his companions in the boat, his eyes are turned from the Saviour. The wind is boisterous: The waves roll high, and come directly between him and the Master; and he is afraid. For a moment Christ is hidden from his view, and his faith gives way. He begins to sink.”—The Desire of Ages, ch. 40, p. 381. When you are walking on the intense waves of life, if you fix your eyes on your circumstances instead of on Jesus, you will despair, and you will sink in your problems. Look to the power of Jesus and not at your little faith. If you give more attention to the storm than to the One who can walk in the middle of it, you will experience the same as Peter. You cannot choose when nor how the storm comes, but you can choose who to look at when you are in the midst of it. Sing hymns of faith, repeat portions of Scripture, pray out loud. Feed your faith and your fear will starve; feed your doubts and your faith will suffer from spiritual starvation.
The one who sinks is not the one who falls into the water, but the one who resists rising. “Jesus did not bid Peter come to Him that he should perish; He does not call us to follow Him, and then forsake us.”—ibid, p. 350.
