«How delightful it is to see approaching over the mountains the feet of a messenger who announces peace, a messenger who brings good news, who announces deliverance»Isaiah 52:7, NET.
IN HER BOOK Gospel Workers, Ellen G. White tells a story that seems to have caught people’s attention in her days. She says that a well was being dug somewhere in New England. When the work was almost finished, there was a terrible collapse and one of the workers was buried. Immediately the alarm was sent out all over town, and «mechanics, farmers, merchants, lawyers, hurried breathlessly to the rescue. Ropes, ladders, spades, and shovels were brought by eager, willing hands. ‘Save him, O save him!’ was the cry.»
After working for hours, rescuers managed to thrust down a pipe and call out to the man. From among the rubble, a voice was heard saying, «Alive, but make haste. It is fearful in here.» Overjoyed, they worked harder in their rescue efforts, and «at last he was reached.» After he was rescued, (He is saved!’ echoed through every street in the town.» Then Mrs. White reflected:
If the threatened loss of a life will arouse in human hearts a feeling so intense, should not the loss of a soul arouse even deeper solicitude in men who claim to realize the danger of those apart from Christ?*
In order to take the gospel to those who were in danger of losing eternal life, the apostle Paul was «in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren» (2 Corinthians 11:26). Why did the apostle take such risks? Because he believed the following promise was fulfilled in him: «How delightful it is to see approaching over the mountains the feet of a messenger who announces peace, a messenger who brings good news, who announces deliverance’ » (Isaiah 52:7, NET).
We are all close to someone who has fallen into the pit of sin, someone who is desperate because it is terrible to live without God and without hope. What are we doing to help them?
If you are one of those who have fallen into the depths of evil, remember there is deliverance in Christ. Today you can exclaim, «l am saved, I am saved!»
