» ‘So shall your descendants and your name remain. And it shall come to pass
that from one New Moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another,
all flesh shall come to worship before Me,’ says the Lord’
(Isaiah 66:22, 23).
YOU probably have friends or acquaintances who attend church on Sunday instead of Sabbath. Why do most Christians meet on Sunday instead ofSabbath, like Adventists do? Is their religious practice based on the Holy Scriptures?
The first references to a change in the day of rest appear in the writings of Barnabas and Justin Martyr (135 and 150 AD). It was then that Emperor Hadrian (117- 138) prohibited obeying the Jewish law, especially observing the Sabbath as a day of rest. Due to these measures, Christians did not want to “Judaize° as Sabbath and circumcision were dubbed, and they decided to leave the biblical Sabbath behind and adopt Sunday. Moreover, when Constantine enacted the first Sunday law, on March 7 of the year 321, his reasoning was, «How can we, who are Christians, keep the same day as those wicked Jews? “Jerome explains why Sunday was chosen: «If pagans call it ‘the day of the sun, ’we willingly agree, for today the light of the world is raised, today is revealed the Sun of justice.”
The change from observing Sabbath as a day of rest to doing so on Sunday is not based on God’s Word at all. What is biblical is that Old Testament patriarchs and New Testament apostles, as well as Jesus Himself, were faithful to the biblical day of rest as stated in the Ten Commandments: “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8, NKJV, EHV, GNT) or “to sanctify it” (JUB). Moreover, the prophet Isaiah says there is a special blessing for those who keep the Sabbath: “The people who do this will be blessed, the people who commit themselves to obedience, who observe the Sabbath and do not defile it” (Isaiah 56:2, NET).
Although being blessed implies a blessing in the present, its fullness is reserved for a future time. This is the beautiful promise: “’For as the new heavens and the new earth which I will make shall remain before Me,’ says the Lord, ‘So shall your descendants and your name remain. And it shall come to pass that from one New Moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me, says the Lord” (Isaiah 66:23, 23).
If Sabbath is the day that will be kept in heaven, how important it is for us to keep it on earth!
