“‘Do you not fear Me?’ says the Lord. ‘Bill you not tremble at My presence,
who have placed the sand as the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree,
that it cannot pass beyond it? And though its waves toss to and fro,
yet they cannot prevail; though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it’»
(Jeremiah 5:22).
The day came for our evangelistic meetings in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. The1950 model car had responded well in spite of the rainstorm. We were in front of the church, waiting for the storm to pass. We prayed for the rain to stop, and it did so almost immediately after the last prayer! There was no electricity, and the only person who had come so far was the person in charge of the sound system, who suggested that we cancel the meeting. “I was taught to preach even if the pews are empty,” I replied, while I used a flashlight that I had in my luggage to set up the computer and the projector. When I was done, I pointed my flashlight at the main ceiling light of the church and I said out loud: ‘Eternal Father, everything is ready; we just need You to turn on the lights.” At that very moment, the electricity returned. I knelt with those who were arriving, and we worshipped the God of miracles.
Instead of adopting the attitude that God’s people had in Jeremiah’s time, today we need to learn to fear the God of storms. “They do not say in their heart, ‘Let us now fear the Lord our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season. He reserves for us the appointed weeks of the harvest’ » (Jeremiah 5:24). The Jews had lost respect for the Almighty God. The fifth chapter of Jeremiah describes the stubborn, hypocrite, and shameless disobedience of the nation. A degrading governmental and ecclesiastical corruption substituted the worship of the true God. Their behavior was so beastly that Jeremiah made a comparison: “They were like well-fed lusty stallions; every one neighed after his neighbor’s wife” (verse 8). They had insisted on acting like the gentile nations to such a degree that as a result they would soon serve pagans in an idolatrous land. Their religious leaders were leading them in their sins.
Represent God with dignity in your community and prevail where ancient Israel failed. We were created to worship God, who left an emptiness in us that can only be filled by Him and for Him. But Satan, envious of our worship, insists on filling it with fear, and he claims this as a worship of his satanic majesty. We must choose between two fears: we either tremble with reverence before the presence of God, or because our life is filled with sonic other fear.
Reverence the God who set limits to the sea and controls the rage of its depths!
