«But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, and will be secure, without fear of evil» (Proverbs 1:33).
In the first chapter of the book of Proverbs, wisdom appears personified, crying out along the streets, inviting us to leave behind foolishness. Having previously defined wisdom as «the fear of God,» Solomon is inviting us to choose and to choose well. Will we respect God in our life, or will we live foolishly? What do you choose? God guides us and shows us the correct path, but the decision is ours: follow His instructions or choose our own path.
Once my older daughter was driving and needed to cross an intersection, but the car in front of her was not moving. She felt impatient. I pointed out that the car in front of her had a student driver in it, and that the student was following the instructions of their teacher. I reminded her of her own lack of experience when she was learning to drive. Our Christian life is similar: we follow the voice of our Teacher, even though sometimes it doesn’t make sense to us. It is through that process of obedience to the Master that we learn. It is the obedience to His Word that allows us to live confidently, without fear.
«I entreat you, for Christ’s sake, to walk in the light. Submit your will to the will of God. . . . Keep the way of the Lord, for you will have no peace in transgression. By an evil course you bring discredit upon your parents and dishonor upon the religion of Christ. Remember that your life is recorded in the books of Heaven, to be opened before the assembled universe. Think what shame, what remorse, would be yours, should it be your unhappy lot to lose eternal life! «Turn you at My reproof: behold, I will pour out My Spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you’ (Proverbs 1:23 .»—Messages to Young People, ch. 112, p. 334.
«My brother, my sister, if these precious moments of mercy are not improved, you will be left without excuse. If you make no special effort to arouse, if you will not manifest zeal in repenting, these golden moments will soon pass, and you will be weighed in the balance and found wanting…. Then will apply the words of the Lord: . . . ‘For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord: they would none of My counsel: they despised all My reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. But whoso hearkeneth unto Me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil’ (Proverbs 1:24-33).” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, ch. 54, p. 263.
The only path that will give us confidence and peace, while eliminating all our fears, is the path of obedience.
