«Do not be afraid of sudden terror, nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes» (Proverbs 3:25).
We humans move between two basic types of fear: the fear of an infinite number of sudden situations that can occur, and the lack of fear of God. Since having an appropriate fear of the Almighty is the cure for all the other fears we have, the absence of such a sanctified fear has made us more and more afraid. In fact, one out of every ten people worldwide suffers from an uncontrollable fear or phobia. As our life is ruled by what we fear, if we fear God, our life will be ruled by Him.
The biblical word most often translated as «fear» is the Hebrew word yaré, and can be better translated today as respect, obedience, honor, and reverence for God. When the word «fear» in the Bible is a translation of the Hebrew word pachad, it means terror, panic, horror, fright, discouragement, cowardice. If you «fear» God (that is, if you reverence, respect, obey, and honor Him), all of your «fears» (terror, panic, horror, fright, discouragement, cowardice) disappear. Praise God for such a beautiful truth!
In the same way, the word «wicked» or «ungodly» used in today’s Bible verse comes from the Hebrew root rashá, and means perverse, criminal, guilty, at enmity with God, evil, guilty of sin. It can refer to a person who has been wounded or abused, and as a result has become insensitive to the pain of others and an enemy of God. This is why it is healthy not to react to others in a personal way; it is better to be compassionate and empathetic with them, since they will have to face the consequences of their attitudes and decisions in their own life.
Are you wavering between these two fears? «Whatever your anxieties and trials, spread out your case before the Lord. Your spirit will be braced for endurance. way will be open for you to disentangle yourself from embarrassment and difficulty.
The weaker and more helpless you know yourself to be, the stronger will you become in His strength. The heavier your burdens, the more blessed the rest in casting them upon your Burden Bearer. …It is our privilege to rest in His love, to say, ‘I will trust Him; for He gave His life for me.’”-The Ministry of Healing, ch. 4, p. 72.
