«In God (I will praise His word), in God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?» (Psalm 56:4).
David wrote this Psalm when he was fleeing from Saul. He took refuge in Philistine territory, he pretended to be crazy to save his own life, and he hid in the cave of Adullum (see 1 Samuel 21:10—22:1). What other evil could David expect? In the midst of these extreme circumstances he had seen the hand of God, and then he exclaimed, «What can a simple mortal do to me? Men can cause us pain, suffering, and death, but no one can steal our spirit nor the future that is waiting for us beyond this life.»
Today’s verse begins with praise. In the heart of one who praises, thanks, and trusts, there is no room for fear. When fear attacks you secretly, praise and glorify God out loud. Praise and fear cannot occupy the same space.
«Some are always anticipating evil or magnifying the difficulties that really exist, so that their eyes are blinded to the many blessings which demand their gratitude. The obstacles they encounter, instead of leading them to seek help from God, the only Source of strength, separate them from Him, because they awaken unrest and repining.»—Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 26, p. 29.
When I returned to my job after my «divine therapy,» the coordinator of human services wanted to be sure of the results. I met with him several times to explain to him the «therapeutic method» I had followed: I studied my Bible many hours a day to find the promises for those who suffer from fear; I made a calendar with those promises and I memorized them; I gave talks at several churches about my technique to overcome fear; and I wrote a book about it. God’s Spirit manifested itself there, because the «method» was not approved by science. After a short silence he said, «Well, it seems that your method is working,» as he signed the authorization for me to return to work.
Besides gratitude and praise, decide to overcome your fears. Words form attitudes, which lead to actions; a repeated action forms a habit, and all of your habits together define your character. A word of praise will help you have a grateful attitude, and that will lead you to courageous acts. A repeated act of courage will be transformed into a habit in your life and from there, with God’s power, you will develop a firm, confident character.
