«You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day» (Psalm 91:5).
Psalm 91 reminds us about something that is of great importance: God’s protection in the midst of danger. God does not promise us a world without risks, but rather His protection in any situation that we face. God does not give us an insurance policy against trials, danger, or death, but whoever trusts in God will never be disappointed. In spite of what surrounds us in the world, nothing can penetrate the protecting shield that God places around us. When we trust in the great love of God and in His final triumph over evil, we can experience unshakable serenity that transcends beyond any circumstance.
«Psalm 91 contains a message of comfort for all who pass through times of trouble, and especially for ‘God’s commandment-keeping people’ and for those who shall experience ‘the time of trouble’ and the perils of the last days. psalm has for its theme the security of the one who puts his trust in God.»—SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 3, p. 843.
We lived in a house that was very large and very old. Early one morning someone knocked on my bedroom door. The pounding of my heart was as loud as the knocking on the door, and I was shaking all over. I took my little daughter in my arms, held her against my chest and with a trembling voice I asked, «Who is it?» I repeated what I could remember of Psalm 91, but the knocking on the door was insistent. I took a rusty old machete in one hand and with the other I opened the door to face my attacker. A little bat almost hit me in the face and flew swiftly around the room to escape through one of the open windows. I praised God because the strange visitor was not a person after all! «God’s commandment-keeping people stand under the broad shield of Omnipotence.»—Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, ch. 20, p. 120.
«Could men see with heavenly vision, they would behold companies of angels that excel in strength stationed about those who have kept the word of Christ’s patience. With sympathizing tenderness, angels have witnessed their distress and have heard their prayers. They are waiting the word of their Commander to snatch them from their peril. But they must wait yet a little longer. … The very delay, so painful to them, is the best answer to their petitions,»—The Great Controversy, ch. 40, p. 630.
