«He met you on the way and attacked your rear ranks, all the stragglers at your rear, when you were tired and weary; and he did not fear God» (Deuteronomy 25: 18).
God does not forget about the evil that is done against His children. The Amalekites were descendants of Esau (Genesis 36:12). They lived by the entranceway into the desert, and they attacked and plundered travellers. Although they had heard how God led the Israelites to leave Egypt (see Patriarchs and Prophets, ch 26, pp. 291, 292), they attacked them from the rear when they were weary and defenseless (see Exodus 17:8—16). God then promised Moses to war against the Amalekites. «The command to wipe out the Amalekites as a nation was first addressed to Joshua (Exodus 17:14), but the actual work of judgment upon this people, which had filled up its cup of iniquity, was carried out in stages. Barak and Gideon (see Judges 5:14; 6:3; 7:12), Saul and Samuel (see 1 Samuel 15:1—9), and David (see 1 Samuel 27:8, 9; 30:1, 17), all participated in executing the decree against them. Finally came the children of Simeon, who completed the task (1 Chronicles 4:42, 43).»—SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 1, pp. 1042. The Amalekites insulted the glory of God when they attacked His people (see Exodus 17:16). Whatever evil others do against you, God takes it as though it were against Him. Whoever touches you, touches His beloved child.
When God ordered in Deuteronomy 25:17—19 to remember the story of the Amalekites, the generation that had suffered the attack had already passed, and the new generation did not carry any personal resentment. The Amalekites were no longer a danger to the Israelites; but God does not forget the evil that is done against His children, especially when they are going through difficult times.
God waited for four hundred years for the Amalekites to repent, until He ordered Saul to execute the death sentence against every Amalekites (see 1 Samuel 15). «The forbearance that God has exercised toward the wicked, emboldens men in transgression; but their punishment will be none the less certain and terrible for being long delayed».- Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 61, p. 628. «The care of God is over the weakest of His children. No act of cruelty or oppression toward them is unmarked by Heaven. Over all who love and fear Him, His hand extends as a shield; let men beware that they smite not that hand; for it wields the sword of justice”.-Ibid., ch. 26, p. 300.
