«And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns» (Philippians 1:6, NLT).
God is not playing hide-and-seek with His plans for your life. His will is not a riddle for you to solve or a test for you to pass. He wants to bless you! Nevertheless, we are often anxious because we expect God to reveal His entire plan all at once. We do not want to wait. We want to receive enough light; not only to make a decision today, but for the rest of our lives. We believe the more information and the less uncertainty we have, the happier we will be.
In His love and wisdom, God reveals His plans in a gradual way. As we grow, He chooses the right times to reveal more to us. Joseph’s life is a good example of this principle. God did not take Joseph out of the pit and immediately place Him as second in command in Egypt. He led him gradually, even when it seemed he had lost it all. I imagine Joseph wondered many things in the process . . . Why was I falsely accused? Why am am I in prison? Why did it take the cup bearer two years to remember the dream and tell Pharaoh? So many unanswered questions. . . But, as Bekeh Utietiang explains in God’s Plan for You, Joseph remained loyal. «Joseph suffered through the years; he did not have the chance to see God’s whole plan for him at once. He only saw it gradually, as it was revealed to him. But he remained faithful, living one day at a time, while waiting for God’s plan to be fully accomplished in his life.»
While we are waiting to receive a clearer revelation of God’s plan for our lives, we must be faithful with the task we have at hand. What we often need is not more information, but more trust in God. As author Lysa TerKeurst explains in her book Uninvited: «I don’t need to know it all. I only need to be close to You. Each day You will show me what steps to take. . . . As long as I follow and obey You, I know I will be on the right path. Even when I take a false step, Your grace will take me back the instant I turn back to You.»
Lord, I want to trust in You every step of the way. As I wait for a clearer revelation of Your plan for my life, help me to be faithful with the tasks I have at hand, even the small, common tasks. I know You are using every day and every experience for me to be able to better serve You.
