«You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength» (Deuteronomy 6:5).
“GOD DOESN’T HAVE GRANDCHILDREN,» writes Donna J. Habenichtin categorical terms. What does she mean?
The full quote said, «Each person must take the step from ‘grandchild’ to ‘child’ of God, because God has no grandchildren, only children.»‘ Using Daniel’s experience in Babylon as an example, this author said that, as important as was the education Daniel received in his childhood, the time came in his life when it was his turn to decide whether or not he would be faithful to the lessons he learned during childhood. Habenicht then adds, «The parents’ religion will not lead the child through life. Only a personal religion will stand the test of time.»
That is the key! If we fail to get our children to establish a personal relationship with their Creator, to the point that they accept Him as their God, sooner or later they will succumb to trials.
It was not by chance that, on the outskirts of Canaan, after so many years of wandering the wilderness Moses communicated to Israel the only effective formula for passing down the knowledge of God to the next generations. What is that «formula»? What an author calls «the D-6 model,» which is nothing more than the exhortations in chapter 6 of Deuteronomy: » ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates’ » (w. 6—9).
What elements make up the D-6 model? According to Reggie Joiner, there are five elements:
1. There is only one God.
2. Love Him «with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.»
3. As a parent, make sure the Word of God is in your heart.
4. Repeat the teachings of the Word to your children and model them before their eyes.
5, Live in such a way that even neighbors know that God is real because of your testimony.
Do you have a personal relationship with God? Remember that if God is real to you, He will also be real to your children, and also to anyone who comes in contact with you, including your neighbors!
Father, please train me to love You with all my heart, with all my soul, and with all my strength, so that that the world will know that You are my Lord and my God.
