» ‘You won’t die!’ the serpent replied to the woman. ‘God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil’ » (Genesis 3:4, 5, NLT).
Although we are no longer in the Garden of Eden, the temptation is the same: pretending to be gods. We want to have greater control and power than we have or can manage. But it is a dangerous game that robs us of peace and life.
Uncertainty is a gift camouflaged in tragedy, that is why it is hard for us to see it as the gift it truly is. Uncertainty is an arrow pointing to the areas of our heart we still need to surrender to God. If we cannot relax unless we know what tomorrow will bring, we are pretending to be God. But, since we are not all-knowing, our peace cannot depend on knowing it all, otherwise we will never have peace. When we try to control every aspect of our lives, not to be organized but to mask our fear, we are pretending to be God. We are not all-powerful, so our peace cannot depend on controlling it all, otherwise we will never have peace.
God’s peace has rules that challenge our common sense: we win by surrendering. By yielding control to God, we win over territory in our minds and our hearts. Jesus said, «I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid» (John 14:27, NLT).
God’s love is the only certainty we need in order to have peace. To relax and let go, we need to learn to trust fully in that love. The process takes time. However, God is not mad or disappointed in us when it is hard for us to trust. He keeps on tenderly calling us, step by step, to a fuller peace. To a more fulfilling life!
God wants us to stop wasting our emotional energy, worrying about the future, and to trustingly surrender in His arms instead. Thus we will be able to savor the present.
Dear Lord, You are God and I am not. I cannot, nor need to, know or control everything in order to have peace. I give up that lie and accept the truth that brings freedom: You love me and are trustworthy.
