«For I proclaim the name of the Lord; Ascribe greatness to our God» (Deuteronomy 32:3).
Sometimes when I pray I feel as if I have swallowed a kiddie pill. If you did not grow up watching Chapulin Colorado, the Mexican television series that mocks superhero shows, allow me to explain: kiddie pills made Chapulin reduce his size and reach a height of about eight inches. As I pray, I sometimes feel as small as Chapulin after he took one of those pills. What right do I have to go before God’s throne and make such presumptuous requests? I hear an accusing voice whispering, «Ask for less, settle for little. Don’t be presumptuous.» Has something similar ever happened to you?
Nevertheless, what matters is not my size, but God’s size. I have always been surprised that the Bible urges us to ascribe greatness to our God (Deuteronomy 32:3). What does that mean? It is impossible! His name could not be any greater. Perhaps it means is that we should act according to the size of the God we serve. Proclaiming His greatness implies asking Him for things only He can do. «The greater the request we make, the greater the person we direct it to is in our eyes,» writes Sugel Michelen in his article «Prayer,» and he is right. You and I may be as small and insignificant as fleas but we are fleas on the back of the Lion of Judah! Our size, whether real or perceived does not matter at all.
«If we live and work according to His will, no dream is too big,» writes Melody Mason in Daring to Ask for More. «Anyway, it is not about our talents or abilities. It is about His!» she adds. God wants to do more in our lives, not less. Sadly, we often lose out on experiencing His presence and power because we are focused on our own size and not His. My friend, lift up your eyes. Ascribe greatness to God’s name by asking for what only He can do!
Dear Lord, there is nothing You cannot do! All power and glory belong to You, forever and ever. Broaden my vision. Give me the holy boldness to dream and to ask for more, for Your glory and for the progress of the gospel. Thank You because Your size and power are what guarantee the effectiveness of this prayer. Amen.
