“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20).
If God asked you to go up to someone you didn’t know and there, in the middle of the I supermarket, to offer to pray for her, would you? And if He asked you to leave a prestigious, well-paid job to have another child, even if you thought you had enough children, would you? Sometimes, in order to obey God, you have to be willing to seem a little crazy (even in the eyes of other Christians).
When Peter was rescued from prison by an angel, he went to the house where the believers had gathered to pray and knocked on the door. It was completely dark when Rhoda, a young maid, went to open the door. However, when she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so glad that, instead of opening the door, she ran inside to tell every- one. When they heard it, the holy men and women who had prayed earnestly for Peter made fun of her by saying, “You are beside yourself!” (Acts 12:15). Since she insisted, they began a theological debate instead of believing her. The skeptical believers explained that she had seen his angel. During all this, Peter was about to knock down the door by knocking on it so hard, then they finally opened it, they were astonished: the girl was not crazy; Peter had been released.
The part I like most about this story is that Rhoda didn’t let herself be convinced. She did not begin to doubt whether or not she had heard Peter’s voice. Although she was just a slave and immigrant girl, she did not allow the doubts and explanations of others to steal her faith. Sometimes God guides us to make a decision, but we don’t know how to explain it to others. We are afraid to say, “I believe God is calling me to write a book” or “I think God wants me to spend more time with my children and work fewer hours” for fear of being treated as crazy. And they would possibly do so! They would probably also tell us we don’t have enough talent or money to do it. However, like Rhoda, let us have the courage to recognize the voice we hear. The miracle you are praying for is on the other side of the door, on the other side of your fear of what they will say.
Dear Lord, I want to recognize and 0bey your Voice, even if the rest of the world thinks I’m crazy. I want to learn to trust Your Word. I want to open the door wide so You can come in.
