WITHOUT STICKERS

«Since you were precious in My sight, You have been honored, and I have loved you; therefore I will give men for you, and people for your life.” (Isaiah 43:4).

In the Land of Wemmicks, a world found in many of Max Lucado’s beautiful stories, every wooden figure, every wemmick, is unique and different. However, these creatures like to spend their lives assessing everyone’s behavior, talents, and appearance. If a wemmick acts well or looks pretty, another wemmick places a golden star sticker on them. However, if their behavior or appearance is not approved of, they are given a gray dot sticker.

There is a wemmick called Punchinello in the village . Every day he tries to receive golden stars, but he only gets gray dots. Punchinello is very sad until he meets Lucia and he realizes there are no stickers on her; no golden ones or gray ones. What’s her secret? Lucia visits the wood maker Eli every day and that’s why the stickers other wemmicks want to give her don’t stick to her. The story ends when Punchinello decides to visit Eli and understands what the carpenter really thinks of him. Eli tells him: «The more my opinion matters, the less those stickers will stick to you.»

Obviously, other people’s opinions have an influence on us—and to a certain degree that is normal and logical; however, just like the carpenter in the story tells Punchinello, the more we cling to God’s opinion of us, the less power other people’s criticism and applause will have over us. They might matter, yes, but they won’t define us. Do you know what God thinks of you? That you are of inestimable value and He loves you (Isaiah 43:4), that He made you with His own hands to give you a life with meaning and purpose (Ephesians 2:10), that you are an heir of His promises and more than a conqueror (Romans 8:17, 37), that you are His ambassador and chosen representative (2 Corinthians 5:20; 1 Pet. 2:9), redeemed, forgiven, and free of condemnation (Ephesians 1:7; Romans 8:1).

As you begin this day, take a moment to remember what God thinks of you. Let His words define you. Allow the truth to be like a holy oil, filling every corner of your heart and preventing other people’s stickers from sticking to you.

Dear Lord, thank You for freeing me from the weight

of other people’s opinions with the truth of Your Word.

I am who You say I am: Your beloved, free, and forgiven daughter.
