“For it is God Who works in you both to Will and to do for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).
PAUL EMPHASIZED that salvation is by grace and that we accept it through faith. In no way does «working out our own salvation» (Phil. 2:12) contradict his preaching. It is the same grace of God that leads us to the fruit. That is, only those who agree to seek shelter in grace can be occupied, dedicated, and work in their salvation and that of their neighbors.
The Bible teaches that we must cooperate With God’s call, get rid of the old man, run patiently, resist the devil. and endure to the end (Eph. 4:22; I Cor. 9:24; James 4:7; Matt.10:22; 24:13)
Salvation is not attained through works, but we must take care of it through personal cooperation with Christ. While we recognize our complete dependence on the merits, the work, and the power of Christ, we admit our commitment and responsibility to live a daily life in harmony with the principles of the gospel by the grace of God.
Dealing with fear and trembling does not mean a servile terror, but our own honest and prudent mistrust. We must «fear» that our will is not permanently surrendered to Christ. The more we recognize our helplessness, the more we ding to His strength. The more we distrust ourselves, the greater confidence we have in Him.
It is really God who is working, apostle emphasized that the power for salvation comes from God, and that He works in us to fulfill His purpose. That takes place as much in wanting, that is, in the initial stimulus, desire, or determination as it is in doing so, that is, in the power to take our decision forward. In wanting, our feet that were off the path are placed back on the path; our ankles that were numbed by sin are awakened and affirmed. In action, our feet move toward the goal, on the right path, in the right direction, and at the right speed.
It is said that the Duke of Wellington was once asked about the percentage of success there was in the missionary effort among the heathen. He answered, “Gentlemen, what are your marching orders? Success is not the question for you to discuss. If I read your orders aright, they run thus, ‘Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.’ Gentlemen, obey your marching orders» (see Gospel Workers, p. 115).
The marching orders are strong and clear, both in our own salvation and in the salvation of our neighbors.
