THE JOYS OF OLD AGE
“The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is their gray head» (Proverbs 20:29).
I DON’T KNOW how old you’re, but I want to tell you that the joys of old age are built throughout life and are guarded as a treasure until the moment arrives to enjoy them. Many people think that old age takes away the joy of living and this becomes minimal when an individual is older; this isn’t necessarily true. Right now, perhaps as you are reading this page, you are wondering: “Will I be able to enjoy old age when now I only have ailments, loneliness, lack of energy, and little physical strength?» Yes! You not only can, but you must enjoy it.
If you are young, it is time to begin filling the corners of your soul with happy moments. It is time to begin enjoying the simple things, building experiences that will give you rewarding memories; it is time to serve others for the sole pleasure of feeling useful, so when you reach old age, you can open the chest of treasures stored away and share your experiences, life lessons, and enlightening moments with others that will make you experience once again the joy of feeling useful.
If you are older, peacefully accept your limitations and discover new skills that perhaps you were not able to develop before because of lack of time. Don’t feel excluded from the chores of life; change the rhythm of how walk and while you do so, revive and enjoy the harvest that your sowing has produced. With your head up end a slow step, show others that you know where you are going; you will soon arrive at your destination without bitterness or pain,
Walking slowly gives you a privilege that young people don’t have: you can contemplate, savor, and enjoy. Talk with children and young people, get a pet, plant a garden, and water the hearts of the despondent with words of hope and encouragement. You can only do this because you already know the path.
Being elderly does not mean losing our enthusiasm or joie de vivre. Be consistent with your existence and take advantage of the resources you possess. God will never take away from you the creative ability or the joy of living each moment. Take new energies from within you so the building of your personality does not fall into ruins.
Constant prayer will make you walk with Jesus and your feet will go safely through the gates of the heavenly home; there, the years will not be counted and we will enjoy eternal youth.
