A few weeks ago, I told you a story about a friend who is very conscientious. Today I want to tell you about something I learned from his brother. Besides being a faithful Church Treasurer and Pathfinder Club Counselor, Steven had another Characteristic: he was always willing to go the extra mile. I saw this attitude in a very clear way in his work as an amateur photographer.
When fulfilling the requirements of the more advanced leadership certificates for the Pathfinder Club, many times the aspiring candidates are asked to show pictures as a record of the activities they carried out. Sometimes this is the only way to certify that the requirements were fulfilled.
At every event, in the middle of the hubbub as we all hurried around taking care of details, Seteven would always take time to photograph everything that was going on. What’s more, afterwards he would edit the photos and post them on the Club’s social media accounts, or provide them to the leaders whenever they were requested.
It seemed like a simple thing, but it took him a lot of time and effort. No one paid him to do this, and people would often demand he send them pictures, taking him totally for granted. He would always cheerfully do this work, besides his other responsibilities, and if he wasn’t present nothing was the same. Among other things, there would not be many pictures available, and many special moments would be left unrecorded.
When Jesus taught about this, there was a company of Roman soldiers nearby. The Israelites really desired revenge on their oppressors, who would often force them to carry heavy burdens up steep hillsides, or coerce them to do other cruel tasks. But Jesus had not come to teach vengeance, at least not in the way they thought of it. “The whole earthly life of Jesus was a manifestation of this principle. It was to bring the bread of life to His enemies that our Saviour left His home in heaven. Though calumny and persecution were heaped upon Him from the cradle to the grave, they called forth from Him only the expression of forgiving love” (Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, p.71)
Jesus not only went the extra mile: He crossed the heavens and reduced himself to the form of a man in order to show us His love. Whenever we do a little more than is asked of us, or something to help others, we are imitating our Master, and that will always bring His blessing together with His reward, although it may seem that no one noticed.
How will you “go the extra mile” today?
