“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrificed to God” (Ephesians 5:1, 2).
This is probably one of the best-known Christian hymns in all the world. It Was written as a poem by Anna Warmer at the request of her sister, who was also a writer, to comfort a Child who was dying.
The sister came from a Puritan family, one of the earliest English families to arrive in North America.
It is true that salvation is personal, and there really is no such thing as a “fifth-generation Seventh-Day Adventist.» Each of us needs to become a first generation son or daughter of God, have a personal encounter with Him, and be converted, even though we were born into an Adventist home.
Yet we often see families transmit their passion for the ministry and for the mission to their children and grandchildren, who in turn as they grow older opt for living lives dedicated to God.
This was the case of these two sisters. They had heard about God from their own family, and they lived a godly life according to their family traditions. They were truly converted when they were adults. Neither of them ever married. Besides writing individually and sometimes jointly in several publications, they gave Bible studies to the students at the nearby military academy. The young soldiers learned this hymn an developed habits of Bible study and trust in God thanks to the efforts of Anna and her sister.
At the time of their death, they were awarded military honors because of their contribution to the spiritual well-being of the soldiers, and they are the only civilians buried in the cemetery at West Point.
Amy Carmichael had also heard about Jesus from her earliest childhood, but it was only when she heard this song that she truly understood the sacrifice that Jesus had made for her, and she was converted. Amy served tirelessly as a missionary in India until the end of her days.
We have probably sung this song many times, but have we really thought about the words and the deep meaning of the message that is presented in such a simple way?
Beyond the family legacy faith that you may or may have not received, the truth that Jesus loves you is something that should motivate you at a personal level.
Can we pray today, like the author, putting all our trust in Jesus…”who died heaven’s gate to open wide. He will wash away my sin, let his little child come in”?
