“Put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering” (Colossians 3:12).
WHEN THE DiSCIPLES saw the mothers bringing their children to Jesus, they reprimanded them; however, seeing this, the Master raised his voice and said to them: “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19: 14). Of course, this isn’t the only biblical incident about evident intolerance. There are more passages, but one example is enough for a demonstration.
Intolerance isn’t an invention of the twenty-first century; it is as old as human beings themselves after sin. It is manifested when we have a problem accepting certain opinions, attitudes, and behaviors of other people, who are, in some ways different from ours or are far from our own interests and ways of thinking. At the present time, intolerance can be felt almost everywhere: adults are intolerant to young people’s and children’s nature; young people who don’t tolerate older parsons; men and women intolerant to the differences typical to genders or to political ideology. And that’s not all, we are sometimes intolerant to other people’s religious beliefs and we boast about having the truth.
The Bible is very clear about the importance of being tolerant. In the words of the apostle Paul, and in a way of entreaty, we get the following appeal: “I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to have a walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:1 3).
Consideration and respect are manifestations that are evidence of tolerance. The greatest proof of Christian tolerance dwells in the fact that we give a hand and walk together, making a team in the name of the Lord despite all disagreements we might have. If we could put aside our differences in order to be in agreement, we would be helping the world to be a safe, pleasant, and harmonious place to live.
May our prayer be: “Heavenly Father, please don’t allow intolerance, lack of love, impatience, and pride to kill my conscience.
Forgive my spiritual narrow mindedness. In Jesus’s name, amen.”
