“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?» (Jeremiah 17:9).
We have spoken a couple of times about broken hearts, about the importance of taking care of ourselves and others in a loving context, and also about some criteria of evaluation. However, in a society that insists that we follow our hearts, it is not wrong to emphasize this concept once again.
We have seen in history how kingdoms have been built and demolished in the name of love, how wars have been sparked and truces have also been established in the name of love. Literature is full of stories, as are movies, and we are guided by principles that the world has forgotten.
Many Christian books have been published on this subject, Ellen White wrote letters about it, and today there are many seminars, sermons, and videos that delve into some questions and issues to keep in mind.
Although every experience is personal and every couple is a world, there are practical tips that apply to all relationships.
Your church probably organizes retreats for singles, for couples, engaged or married. Sometimes we avoid attending events like these, but the Family Life Department tries to look after this very important area that we often seek to keep at the edge of our spiritual lives.
I recommend that you take advantage of the resources available and always have married mentors whom you can consult when you have questions or need advice.
A certain pastor said that it was a requirement to have a deep personal encounter with God before establishing a relationship. On both sides. God has to be the most important common factor and even though the heart is very deceitful, there are many guidelines we can follow to evaluate ourselves and evaluate the individual we are with.
Maya Angelou, an American writer, wrote a beautiful phrase for women, but if paraphrased, it can be applied to both genders: «Your heart has to be so hidden in God that your partner has to seek Him just to find you.»
I would also like to add an essential part to the well-known phrase by Saint-Exupéry: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly.” May you always be guided by God.
Loving is beautiful and proper, but only in God can we protect ourselves from the deceptions of our nature.
