«Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever» (Daniel 12:3).
IN MY PRE-SCHOOL CLASS, the theme for the day was the stars. Some of the children passionately recounted their experiences. In the midst of such enjoyable chatter, one of the little ones, barely three years old, very seriously and sternly asked me: «Where do the stars go during the day?»
He remained silent while his inquisitive and anxious look told me he was waiting for my answer. He was confident, with wonderful childish trust, that I would know how to answer his question.
I confess that although the reply was simple, I hesitated before answering him. I said with a nervous smile: «During the day, the stars stay in the sky.»
Then he continued with another question: «Do they sleep during the day and turn off their lights?»
«They never turn their lights off,» I explained again, «it’s in the darkness of night that we see their light.»
If I have to be sincere, the topic became a little difficult for me, not because I did not know the answer, rather, the question turned into something deeper and more significant for my life. It made me think that God’s children are just like stars. They reflect God’s light, which can be seen more intensely in the darkness and shadows that conflicts, trials, and difficulties life may bring.
When troubles make your present gloomy and the future seems uncertain, cling to God’s hand and say like Job: «For I know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth; and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God» (Job 19:25, 26). This is what it means to shine like a star.
In the midst of spiritual and emotional darkness, do the following:
