“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men» (Matthew 5:13).
EI Salar de Uyuni is in Potosi, Bolivia. It is the largest and highest salt flat in the world, more than 10,500 Can you imagine so much salt in one place? It is also an important deposit of lithium, potassium, boron, and magnesium.
One of the characteristics of this salt flat (by the way, you can search for it today on the Internet to learn a more about it) is that it reflects the sky when it is slightly covered with water. You will certainly see spectacular photos that are taken with its perfect mirror.
The salt flat contains 10 billion tons of salt. I do not think we can comprehend how much salt there is there. It is spread out in eleven layers of different thicknesses, reaching 120 meters in depth. It is put together in piles in order to move it more easily.
What would happen if, by some chemical phenomenon, all that salt lost its value or properties? What a gigantic deposit of nothing there would be! Jesus used the example of the preservation properties of salt. God not only makes us His children to have a relationship with us, but also so that others can receive Him, as well.
«Salt must be mingled with the substance to which it is added; it must penetrate and infuse in order to preserve. So it is through personal contact and association that men are reached by the saving power of the gospel. They are not saved in masses, but as individuals. Personal influence is a power. We must come close to those whom we desire to benefit» (Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, ch. 2, p. 36), just as the crystals get close to each other in the salt flat.
Everything in our lives that comes from Jesus will spread to others, season them, and revitalize them.
Unless we have a living faith, we will not be able to exert an effective influence on the world.
When I passed through Bolivia, tours to the salt flat were cancelled and I did not get to see it. However, in order to join the largest Source of salt in the world, we do not need any extra transport. We only need to ask Him for a daily provision to bring that flavor to the earth. Entrance to it will never be cancelled, and God can use our bodies as much more effective vessels to hold the necessary amount that someone else needs.
Put yourself in His hands today so you do not become «tasteless.» Where can you scatter some salt this Sabbath?
