«And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God» (Ephesians 6:17).
THE SWORD used by a Roman soldier was made of iron, had two edges, was protected by a sheath, and was cinched to the belt. In the Bible, the sword is a symbol of war, divisions, violent words, divine justice, and the powerful and penetrating Word of God
The Roman sword was an offensive weapon. The Word of God is also our weapon used to attack. The soldier’s sword penetrated the physical, the sword of the Spirit penetrates the spiritual. One reaches the body, the other reaches the heart.
Peter attacked with a Roman sword, until he learned to use the heavenly sword Moses wanted to use the sword against Egypt until he learned that he was better with the sword of the Spirit. The more a physical sword is used, the more it is dulled, but the continued use of God’s Word makes it sharper in our lives.
A physical sword requires the expert hand of a soldier, but the sword of the Spirit requires a receptive heart, which recognizes that it is alive and effective.
The sword wields our strength, the Word wields the strength of God. The sword wounds, damages, and kills, while the sword of the Spirit wounds in order to heal and give life. The sword of the Spirit is a weapon of defense, attack, and conquest. We defend ourselves from evil, attack evil, and conquer lives for the Lord.
Can you imagine what would happen if we treated the Bible the way we treated our cellphone? That is to say, if we always carried the Bible in our hands, if we took a look at it several times during the day, if we looked for it desperately every time we are missing it, if we used it to send messages to our friends, if we treated it as if we could not live without it, if we gave it to our children to always be in touch with them, if it were our «Google» like a search engine to help us find answers, if we dedicated hours and hours per day to it like some spend on their cellphones . . .
Unlike the cellphone, the Bible never loses its signal, either on the mountain or the sea; it is never without service or looking for a network. We don’t need to worry about data, because it is unlimited; Jesus has already paid for it forever.
Life is a permanent attack on evil in the quest for good and for eternal victory. Therefore, rather than using a cellphone to seek the help of men, it is better to turn to the Bible to seek God’s help.
