«Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance» (Psalm 42:5).
THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG is my alarm and what wakes me up in the morning, when the first rays of the sun announce the dawn. It comes from a tiny little bird with deep red feathers on its head and part of its breast. Not only its song is lovely, but all of its beautiful. Its presence invites me to live the day by flying high and seeking sustenance with confidence in God. However, not all days bring sunny dawns. Some of them come with clouds.
One afternoon, the sky began to fill with gray clouds, and thunder and lightning announced a big storm. When the rain intensified, I went to the usual window and . . . surprise! There it was, in the midst of the storm, my friend, the tiny bird with the red head and breast, standing on a fragile branch. With its head up and beak open, it drank from the rain that fell from the sky. When its wings weighed too much, it opened them and shook them vigorously to continue his joy under the storm. When the rain stopped, the bird opened its wings and flew away. What a great lesson for me! It was the best staging of an exercise of trust during stormy times.
Then the Bible statement came to my mind: «Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows» (Matthew 10:31). These words, together with the picture I could enjoy from my window, came to remind me that even though the storm intensifies, God is in control and strengthens our fragility. His desire is to give us rest and peace; thus, we can always praise Him, even in the midst of the storm.
Praise is an attitude that does not have much to do with external conditions; rather, it’s a personal attitude that develops when we trust that God can hold us under any circumstances, at any time, in any place.
If you are going through a difficult trial at this time of your life, I invite you to carry out the following acts of praise:
