«So (Naaman) went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean» (2 Kings 5:14).
Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a brave and highly esteemed man…but he was leper.
Naaman left for Samaria with 30,000 silver coins, 6,000 gold coins, and 10 changes of clothing, plus a letter of recommendation from his king to the king of Israel.
Naaman had imagined exactly what the procedure would be by which his leprosy would be healed. The name of the Lord would be invoked and instantly, he would be clean. However, his pride needed to be wounded. His heart, accustomed to commanding, needed to learn to obey.
Like a spoiled child, he turned around and refused to follow the command of the prophet Elisha. However, his servants persuaded him and made him be reasonable, and Naaman finally agreed, set aside his pride, and obeyed the Lord’s command.
Naaman, a pagan, was obedient and faithful, and God rewarded his obedience forever. When Jesus preached in Nazareth, He told his story and showed how many of Israel’s lepers had been passed by because they were unbelievers. Instead, this noble pagan had been faithful to his convictions regarding justice and was more worthy of blessing (Prophets and Kings, ch, 19, p. 239).
In Steps to Christ, Ellen White said, “Obedience—the service and allegiance of love—is the true sign of discipleship. Thus the Scripture says, ‘This is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.’ . . . Instead of releasing man from obedience, it is faith, and faith only, that makes us partakers of the grace of Christ, which enables us to render obedience. We do not earn salvation by our obedience; for salvation is the free gift of God, to be received by faith. But obedience is the fruit of faith (ch. 7, p. 60).
With what is your obedience being tested today? Do you perhaps feel that God is asking you something that is difficult to understand or accept?
The miracle is not in the water. It is in the number of times we are willing to break our pride obediently before His Majesty.
