IN SEARCH OF TREASURE

EVERYDAY OBJECTS

‘A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil.

For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.»

(Luke 6:45)

Scavenger hunts are fun at any age. Everyone loves the thought of finding a treasure.

I went on a lot of scavenger hunts with my friends and family growing up, and I’ve used them lots of times in my classes over the years, but only once did I have to actually dig to find a treasure.

Our Pathfinder Club was having a day of outdoor activities one Sunday and in the afternoon, when it was almost time to go home, the leaders told us we would have to follow some clues until we found a treasure.

We had participated in a community project earlier in the day, and before lunch the leaders had set up the treasure hunt.

We were all thinking about having a nice piece of cake for dessert—they usually brought a big cake for us on special occasions —so we figured we already knew what the “treasure» would be. Once we found the last clue we dug in the place we were supposed to, and we found a piece of paper with a Bible verse that referred to the “treasure» that is found in the Bible. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed. I had been expecting a different kind of “treasure.”

As I grew older I learned that the greatest treasure that we have on earth truly is the Bible; it is like a chest full of priceless jewels. Each time we open its pages and «dig into» it, we can discover new lessons in stories that we may have already read hundreds of times.

The more we feed on God’s Word, the more wonderful things we will have to share with others, the greater our understanding will be of the battle between good and evil, and the better prepared we will be to face that battle every day.

Reading the Bible will make treasures grow in our own heart, so it will be filled with goodness; otherwise our heart will starve, and evil will find its way into it. We cannot offer to others what is not already inside of us.

Nowadays it is not unusual to hear of popular ideas suggesting that there is goodness within us naturally, and that we have great power within ourselves; but the truth is that we need God. We are nothing but an empty well if we do not fill ourselves with the true Bread of Life.

What subjects do you usually talk about with your friends?

What kind of expressions do you use most often?

What do you expect to find as you dig deeper into your life? How do you spend your free time?

The answers to these questions may indicate the contents of our heart.

I hope each of us will always be able to bring forth “good treasure.”
