«For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them»
(Ephesians 2:10).
A FEW MONTHS AGO, I heard a pastor say from the pulpit that the greatest need of our young people in these times is to have a well-defined identity in their personal development, to live with hope and have genuine guidance from a responsible adult society. It seemed very interesting to me and I would like to analyze three concepts with you.
Identity is what defines an individual: his or her physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual characteristics. These are manifested from the first years of life. The sense of identity is learned through what we feel we are, and this, in turn, is learned through the messages other people send us, especially the significant adults in our lives. This is how we recognize ourselves as that different and unique someone that, we really are.
When young girls reach adolescence, they fervently seek to know who they are. In a society where stereotypes that distort the essence of human beings created in God’s image stand as models, s this task becomes confusing as marketing extols, in some cases, seduction, a certain type of physical beauty, and habituation to a lifestyle where waste or excess seems to be the maximum for a woman to enjoy her passage through this world. This makes it very difficult for them to have a healthy sense of their identity.
When facing a crisis of identity, a girl experiences doubts regarding her real self and the purpose of her life. It’s imperative that we as mothers be with our daughters in this search process, modeling before them the joy and happiness of being a woman created in the image of God. The expressions of appreciation, right advice, and respectful treatment of her femininity should remind her at all times her marvelous origin.
Dear friend, we are daughters of God, created in an exceptional manner, special and unique; it’s important that young ladies have a daily reminder of their origin and their final destiny so while we wander through this contaminated world, we may walk unhesitatingly with well-defined purposes and with values that act for them as a map for personal realization on this earth that eventually will take her to eternity.
