Do you know which Bible verse is the first to mention the city of Damascus?
That would be Genesis 14:15, which says that Abraham passed through Damascus when he left Haran for the land of Canaan.
Many years later, King David conquered Damascus and put several garrisons of soldiers in that city.
Saul of Tarsus was on his way to Damascus to persecute the Christians who had fled there from Jerusalem after Stephen was stoned. But before arriving in Damascus, a great light caused Saul to fall to the ground. Jesus called for him by name and asked him, «Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?» You can read that encounter between Jesus and Saul in the Bible, in Acts 9.
Saul went blind and had to be taken to Damascus, where a Christiannamed Ananias was sent by Jesus to heal him.
Imagine Ananias’s surprise when he found out that he had to go heal the man who was famous for persecuting Christians! However, he obeyed Jesus and went to Straight Street (which is still in Damascus), and healed Saul in the name of Jesus.
From that moment on, Saul not only changed his name to Paul, but also stopped persecuting Christians. He became a Christian and spoke about Jesus throughout the world for the rest of his life.
Now you know some of the things that happened in Damascus. Find out what other Bible characters were connected to this city and write them in your Prayer Journal.
