«See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil» (Ephesians 5:15, 16).
A FEW MONTHS AGO I had the opportunity to return to my childhood home. It was a wish that I had pending and that at last, after many years, I was able to fulfill. Contemplating the worn and ruined door of the entrance to what used to be my house made me go back in time, and in the wings of imagination I could see the narrow figure of my mother eagerly waiting for her children to come home. The image I have of my father is weak, for it has vanished over time. My own image, that of the rebellious girl, also disappears in a wake of forgetfulness.
Many were the years lived there, with indelible memories of moments as special as Christmas eating Mom’s stews and admiring the tree cut by Dad. In the end, with a sigh, I was able to say goodbye to my childhood house, to my parents, to my home; time had gone by and hadn’t waited for me. Then I thought: How many things I never did, how many words I didn’t say, how many silly arguments, how many «thank Yous» I never said
Yes . . . Today is the day when we must live enjoying pleasant experiences intensely and learning from mistakes; it’s the day to look at our loved ones consciously and to express to them in words and deeds what they mean to us. It’s time to make sure that when those who are here today are gone, our arms are not left empty.
Today is the day to laugh with the ones who are happy and weep with the ones who have an unexpressed sadness in their hearts. It’s time to play with the children, because thanks to them, the soul will remain young. It’s the day of dreaming alongside the teenage son so as not to lose his illusions; to thank the husband for all that he does for his family.
Today is the day to thank God for so many blessings that we sometimes don’t see in the haste with which we live our lives: the food at the table, the roof that covers us, the greeting of the neighbor, the barking of the dog that cares for us, the sound of rain on the window panes, the vibration of thunder deep inside.
Your blessings are many; don’t let them pass by without paying attention to them. Enjoy them to the fullest. They all come from God, who sustains you.
