«For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men» (1 Peter 2:15).
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY is commemorated in almost every country in the world. The date isn’t necessarily the same everywhere, but the purpose of this celebration is the same:
to commemorate the beginning of the fight for women’s equal rights with respect to men
to support the fight for women to participate in all areas of society and
to defend women’s emancipation and development throughout the world.
Although women’s situation has improved through the years, there is still a long road to travel, especially in some countries.
According to data from Mexico’s National Statistics and Geography Institute, 50% of sexual assaults are perpetrated against girls under the age of sixteen; 603 million women live in countries where domestic violence isn’t considered a crime; 70% Of women around the world say they have suffered from a violent physical or sexual experience at some point in their lives; and over 60 million girls are married before the age of eighteen. No doubt this data is food for thought.
World authorities have decided to promote women’s rights to improve their quality of life. Although we frequently learn of initiatives in that area, it’s still an unfinished task.
Many of us may possibly be part of these statistics. Feeling pain, we may be trying to overcome experiences of abuse, thanks in part to the help of support groups. This is great! However, more than anything, it’s important for the equality God gave us when He created us to be restored, nurtured and preserved according to His divine will. Gender battles, overtaking roles, raising our voices to denigrate the opposite sex or disdaining men’s leadership are wrong ways that only reinforce inequality.
I sincerely believe that the only way to find equality with our complimentary gender is to be more of a woman every day. A woman’s essence can be summed up in a few words: we are color, aroma, beauty, passion, sweetness and strength. Take pride in the exquisite way you were created and show the world that you are God’s handiwork.
