«The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars, yes, the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon» (Psalm 29:3-5).
IT WAS A GLOOMY DAY, at least I saw it that way. Sitting at the kitchen table, with great sadness, I put my hands together in prayer and asked God to let me hear His voice. I waited and waited, and everything seemed to stay the same, absolute silence. Minutes passed and my sadness turned into anger, because of my impatience. God disagreed with me, He didn’t let me hear His voice, nothing less than what I expected. Then I hit the table and got up to start my day!
It was there, in that moment, when my breathing was put on hold. A bird in my garden whistled a beautiful melody. I silently watched it and saw how its chest swelled and its little eyes looked up to the sky with natural devotion. Then I heard in those trills the voice of God saying to me, «If I take care of the birds, I will take care of you too.» What a comfort! What a great lesson! «A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song,» wrote Maya Angelou. And so it is, That bird came to me with a great lesson to teach me just as I was beginning to draw the wrong conclusion.
Yes, God speaks, but most of the time, mental and spiritual turbulence prevents us from hearing His voice. God’s voice isn’t silenced for you or me. What’s more, He longs for us to listen to Him. When we stop to listen the song of birds, to admire the beauty of a star blinking in the sky, when we watch the petals of a flower open in the field, we can feel and listen to God’s love pouring down upon us.
This morning, be silent, quiet the voices in your mind that rush you to start your daily tasks and listen carefully the voice of God. Do it with an open mind, putting no limits on the Lord, who may want to manifest Himself to you through the singing of a bird.
Accept His choice. Don’t ask, don’t demand, don’t complain; simply sharpen your senses so that the Lord may connect with you and fill you with strength.
