The older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior. . teachers of good things— that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers (Titus 2:3-5).
GOING THROUGH BOOKS in a library, I came across a title that caught my attention: Old Age. I read some excerpts that I thought were interesting. A phrase from Bonnie Prudden, a renowned climber, inspired me to share this thought: «We can’t turn back the clock, but we can wind it up again
Old age is a stage of life not only burdened with years, wrinkles, and aches; but also with experiences, events lived, and memories. It’s when the number of years moves into the background, to enter a new path that leads us to spirituality, to what’s essential, leaving behind the banal and superfluous things of life. All this and much more is what makes old age a stage that offers us an abundance of options.
In old age, we are expert drivers of life. The physical and the temporal move to the background and we become teachers for those who come behind us. I have always heard phrases such as «youth, a divine treasure.» Will we belittle the treasure of those who have passed through all ages of the life cycle, becoming «masters of the good»? We live in times when people think they can buy youth through spa sessions, rejuvenating clinics, or creams and oils. But, who has made us believe that getting old is tantamount to being useless?
Your gray hair and the wrinkles on your skin are not signs of defeat; they make you a winning warrior, they endorse you as a teacher of the good, they put you in a position of a leader, a mentor, and counselor. It’s a position of privilege that you must assume with gratitude and joy. Don’t look in the mirror with annoyance thinking your commitment to life is over. Youth isn’t just a physical state, it has to do with attitude. Learn to live with your years; you still have wings and, if you put yourself in God’s hands, you’ll fly very high.
God says, «Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint» (Isaiah 40:30, 31).
