«And the Lord said to Satan, ‘The Lord rebuke you, Satan/ The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you/ Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?’ » (Zechariah 3:2)
It was midnight, February 9, 1709, and Pastor Wesley’s house was engulfed in flames.
«Fire! Fire! «—the people of Epworth shouted.
But the family was fast asleep. Minutes later, some burning debris fell on one of the girl’s bed and woke her up. She ran to her parents’ bedroom and they grabbed the baby, called the other children and rushed out of the house. However, five-year old little John kept on sleeping. Even though they tried to rescue him, it was impossible to cross the wall of fire that surrounded him. Aware of the imminent danger, the family knelt in the garden and cried to God for the child’s life. Suddenly, he leaned out the window of the second floor. With an improvised human ladder, they managed to save him seconds before the roof collapsed.
Since then, John was considered to be «a brand plucked from the fire» (Zech. 3:2) whose life was miraculously preserved because God had a purpose for him. Even though he was very poor, he managed to study at Charterhouse School and Oxford. These were difficult times for the British society as social differences, poverty, promiscuity, abuse and epidemics abounded. Nonetheless, John Wesley woke up early in the morning to be in communion with God, asking for wisdom to be able to comfort the poorest and bring them the news of salvation. To accomplish it, he traveled long distances by foot or carriage through rain or snow. In 54 years, he traveled an average of 7,000km (c. 4,350 mi and preached 780 sermons per year. He also wrote 230 books and taught children and adults, both wealthy and poor, that religion did not consist of practices or rituals but of intimately living with God. Similarly, every repentant sinner could consider themselves a brand plucked from the fire. «Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace» (Dan. 3:17). And if He can deliver us from this one, He can also deliver us from evil. The immorality that exists in the world—the deceit, promiscuity and wickedness—will not be able to corrupt the ones who make God their inseparable Friend. Moreover, a noble purpose will inspire the life of those who live close to the Savior.
Do you have the joy of being rescued from everlasting fire? Have you been delivered from evil? Discover the purpose of Christ for your life. A noble work certainly awaits you.
