«He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked» (1 John 2:6).
IN THE BOOK The Power of Effective Prayer, Jansen and Gloria Trotman relate a very interesting story about prayer (p. 48). They tell us that a young missionary was frustrated in his attempts at evangelization because he noticed resistance on the part of the people to whom he was preaching. Exhausted from seeing that all his efforts to have a successful ministry were useless, he thought of quitting and returning to his country. Before getting underway with his plan to leave, the young missionary decided to talk to a pastor.
«l am sick of these people,» he said. «I will not concern myself with them any longer. They can figure it out for themselves, because I’m leaving.
«Wait a moment,» the pastor stopped him, putting his hand on the young man’s arm. «Could it be that they have nailed you to a cross?» he asked.
«No,» replied the young man.
» Have they mocked you or insulted you?» continued the pastor.
«No,» was the answer again.
«Have they spit on you?» was the next question.
«No, of course not,» replied the young man once again.
“Then they must have pierced your side with a spear…”
The young man understood the message that the pastor wanted to communicate to him. Jesus, our Example to imitate, our Model in all things, our Teacher above all other teachers, suffered enormously so that we could be saved. And despite everything He endured from the crowd, He asked His Father to forgive those who were inflicting such great grievances on Him. Jesus was rejected those He came to save, and for them He prayed to the Father. How more must we pray for everyone, friends and enemies, so they may be saved.
If we call ourselves «Christians,» our path in life is to walk as He walked, and there is no doubt that prayer was His way of walking. Total dependence on God through prayer is the path our Master sets out for us: a path that is a privilege, although sometimes it is difficult to see it that way. efficacy Of His prayers is undeniable, although at a superficial glance it might not seem so. «The key to His prayer was this: «Thy will be done.»
