Mr. Myers looked down at the furry lumps nestled against the belly of his female cocker spaniel. Five babies. Five squirming, yapping, yawning bundles of energy.
Then he frowned. One of the puppies had a weak, deformed leg and could only limp about, trying to keep up with the others. The man sighed. «No one will want her.»
A few days later, after he’d put a «Puppies for Sale» sign in his window, he answered a soft knock at his door. A boy stood looking up at him. «How much for the puppies?» he asked.
«Twenty-five dollars each,» Mr. Myers announced.
«Oh,» the boy said sadly. «I only have three dollars. May I at least see them?»
Mr. Myers led the boy to the box. The boy’s face lit up as he watched the five little balls of fur. Suddenly he gasped. «Please, mis-ter,» he exclaimed, «could I have that one with the bad leg? I’ll pay you all I’ve got and more each week. Please, let me have that one.»
«Now, son,» Mr. Myers said. «You don’t want her. She’ll never be able to walk well. Wouldn’t you rather have one that can play with you when it grows up?»
That’s when the boy lifted his pant leg to reveal shiny metal braces. «I’ve never been able to walk too good,» he said. «I reckon that little puppy will need a bit of understanding. I sure did.»
The boy left with the crippled puppy held gently in his arms.
